The City of Cape Town selected the Forcelink mobile workforce management solution for the maintenance management of IT and other assets on the bus fleet for the MiCiti IRT project. The Integrated Rapid Transit (IRT) system in Cape Town, aimed at significantly improving public transport in the City, is primarily a ‘Bus Rapid Transit’ system, designed in a way that emphasises integration with other modes, especially rail, the backbone of public transport in Cape Town.

Forcelink is deployed on a range of devices including Android Tablets and Android and Symbian smartphones, as well as at various control locations. The project involves GPS for vehicle positioning, and data from various assets on the fleet, such as camera’s, station gates and access systems, ticketing systems etc., and it is a pre-requisite that field engineers have complete information on the status of the assets they are maintaining on mobile devices. The objective is to minimise downtime on the transport network, and real-time field mobile solutions for both planned and emergency maintenance will greatly add to the achievement of that aim. We are working with ICT Works as partners.

  1. Routine servicing (scheduled maintenance) and maintenance of mechanical plant and equipment at the bus stations

  2. Emergency repairs (unscheduled maintenance)

  3. Replacement of specified assets

  4. Regular condition monitoring of facilities and assets

  5. Development and implementation of facilities management operations and preventative maintenance schedules
